Dubsado is cheaper and more customizable: $335 or $525 a year, with no platform fee on payments, but the scheduler and automated workflows are only on the $525 Premier plan, and setup takes real time. HoneyBook is faster to set up and more polished, at $29 to $109 a month billed yearly, and it processes payments itself, at card rates from 2.7% + 10¢ and 1.5% on bank transfers. On cards that’s close to what you’d pay Stripe through Dubsado; on large bank transfers HoneyBook costs far more.
If client paperwork is only half your problem, because you also need calls answered and leads followed up, both tools stop short, and that’s where Stack Space fits. Prices below come from Dubsado’s and HoneyBook’s pricing pages, checked October 2026, plus one dated third-party source where a figure isn’t on the page.
What do Dubsado and HoneyBook actually do?
Both are “clientflow” tools for the paperwork side of a service business: lead-capture forms, proposals, contracts with e-signature, invoices, payment collection, questionnaires and scheduling. All the admin between “I’m interested” and “here’s your final invoice.”
They’re built for solo creatives and small studios: photographers, designers, planners, coaches, consultants. If your business is “client inquires, I send a proposal, they sign, I do the work, I invoice,” either one will organize that well.
Neither one answers your phone, and neither is a marketing automation engine. Keep that in mind, because it decides the comparison for some readers.
Dubsado vs HoneyBook pricing (2026)
| Dubsado | HoneyBook | |
|---|---|---|
| Entry plan | Starter: $335/yr ($35/mo monthly) | Starter: $29/mo billed yearly |
| Middle plan | — | Essentials: $49/mo billed yearly, $59 monthly |
| Top plan | Premier: $525/yr ($55/mo monthly) | Premium: $109/mo billed yearly, $129 monthly |
| Scheduler and automations | Premier only | Essentials and up |
| Lead forms | 1 active on Starter, unlimited on Premier | 2 on Starter, 10 on Essentials, unlimited on Premium |
| Team | 3 extra users free, then from $25/mo | Up to 2 on Essentials, unlimited on Premium |
| Card payment fee | No Dubsado fee; your processor’s rate (Stripe 2.9% + 30¢) | From 2.7% + 10¢ |
| Bank transfer (ACH) fee | Processor’s rate (Stripe 0.8%, capped at $5) | 1.5% |
Sources: Dubsado pricing and HoneyBook pricing, October 2026. Dubsado’s monthly prices and processor rates are from Raoura’s Dubsado pricing teardown (July 2026), because Dubsado’s page lists only annual prices. Dubsado raised prices on December 1, 2025; subscribers from before then keep their old rates ($20/$40 a month, or $200/$400 a year). HoneyBook’s plan table lists cards “starting at 2.9% + 25¢,” while its fee section says 2.7% + 10¢, so check the rate on your account.
The real decision is in the fee rows. A payment platform always takes a cut. The difference is that Dubsado passes you the processor’s rate, while HoneyBook’s card fee is its own.
Dubsado: deep customization, steeper setup
Dubsado is the tinkerer’s choice. Forms and proposals can be styled heavily, workflows can branch, and you can build a client experience that looks like your brand rather than Dubsado’s.
Where Dubsado wins:
- Customization depth. Styled client portals, form templates and workflow logic that more polished tools won’t let you touch.
- Price. Premier at $525 a year works out to under $44 a month, with unlimited clients and projects.
- No Dubsado fee on payments. You pay only Stripe, Square or PayPal.
Where Dubsado costs you:
- Starter is limited. The scheduler, automated workflows, public proposals and the Zapier connection are Premier-only, so most businesses that pick Dubsado for automation need the $525 plan.
- The setup cliff. Dubsado’s power sits behind a steep learning curve, and there’s a whole industry of Dubsado specialists who build accounts for a fee. Budget for your time or theirs.
- A busier interface. The flexibility asks more of you than HoneyBook does.
In one line: Dubsado is a kit car, brilliant if you enjoy the build.
HoneyBook: polished, simple, fee-based
HoneyBook is the opposite bet: opinionated, good-looking and quick to start. Proposal and contract templates work out of the box, every plan includes HoneyBook AI and e-signature, and HoneyBook offers to turn your existing files into HoneyBook templates for free.
Where HoneyBook wins:
- Time to a working system. Hours, not weekends.
- Client experience. Smooth proposals, easy payments, a modern client portal.
- SMS reminders on Essentials and up, which Dubsado’s pricing page doesn’t list, and a Business Phone & SMS add-on from $8/mo for your own number, calls and 300 two-way texts a month.
- A 60-day money-back guarantee on paid plans, per its pricing page.
Where HoneyBook costs you:
- The payment fees. From 2.7% + 10¢ on cards and 1.5% on bank transfers collected through HoneyBook. On $100,000 a year paid by card, that’s about $2,700 before the subscription (Stripe through Dubsado would be about $2,900 plus 30¢ a payment). The bank-transfer fee is the bigger difference: it has no cap. Premium subscribers processing over $500,000 a year may qualify for lower rates.
- The customization ceiling. You adapt to HoneyBook’s way more than it adapts to yours.
- The team cap. Essentials covers up to 2 team members; past that you’re on Premium at $109 a month billed yearly.
In one line: HoneyBook is a well-built rental. Move in today, but you can’t knock down walls.
Hear the receptionist take a real call — it rings your phone in about a minute.
What does each cost for a real business?
Take a consultant who collects $8,000 a month across 10 card-paid invoices and wants a scheduler and automations, paying monthly:
| Subscription | Card fees on $8,000 (10 payments) | Monthly total | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dubsado Premier | $55 | Stripe 2.9% + 30¢ = $235 | $290 |
| HoneyBook Essentials | $59 | 2.7% + 10¢ = $217 (or $235 at 2.9% + 25¢) | $276–$294 |
| Stack Space Starter | $125 | Stripe 2.9% + 30¢ = $235 | $360 |
At HoneyBook’s advertised 2.7% + 10¢, its card rate beats Stripe’s standard rate by about $18 a month; at the 2.9% + 25¢ its plan table also lists, the two are level. So on cards, HoneyBook’s fee isn’t the penalty it’s often made out to be. Steer more clients to bank transfer and the order flips: HoneyBook takes 1.5% with no cap, while Stripe’s ACH rate is 0.8% capped at $5, so a $4,000 bank payment costs $60 on HoneyBook and $5 through Dubsado’s Stripe payments. Stack Space costs the most here because it does more than paperwork, which only matters if you need what’s in the next section. We priced it at Starter because Launch’s 45 receptionist minutes cover only a light call load; on Launch ($30) the same month is $265.
Where do Dubsado and HoneyBook both stop?
Here’s the part most Dubsado-vs-HoneyBook articles skip, because most are written for wedding photographers. If you’re a consultant selling systems, or you’re running an agency with actual lead flow, the job isn’t just paperwork. It’s response. And neither tool answers a call for you: HoneyBook sells an $8/mo business line with two-way texting, but a person still has to pick up.
That’s where the money leaks. A caller who reaches voicemail can simply call the next business on the list, and the person who picks up the phone is usually the one closest to buying. A good proposal template doesn’t help the lead who hung up.
Stack Space closes the loop the clientflow tools leave open, from call to proposal to invoice to paid, with AI employees doing the drafting and chasing, managed by Stax, the AI brain that runs the workforce. It covers the clientflow basics (proposals, estimates customers accept with a typed e-signature, contracts, invoicing, payments, booking, forms) and then keeps going: email campaigns, branching automations you generate by describing them in plain English, and an AI Workforce that drafts replies, chases invoices, and turns call transcripts into priced proposals (how a yes becomes a paid invoice). Plans start at $30/mo and Starter is $125/mo, and there are no added platform fees on your payments beyond standard Stripe processing.
The trade: at Starter, Stack Space costs more than either tool, as the worked total above shows, and it’s more than a solo photographer needs. Every plan includes the AI receptionist, from 45 minutes a month on Launch to 250 on Starter, and when the minutes and any packs run out it stops answering until you add more or the month resets. If your whole business is bookings and invoices, don’t pay for an AI Workforce you won’t use.

Which should you pick? Scenario verdicts
- Solo wedding photographer or event creative: HoneyBook. You’ll be booked and invoicing by tonight, and the client experience sells for you.
- Solo service pro who loves systems: Dubsado Premier. No platform fee on top of your processor’s rate and the deepest customization, if you’ll actually finish the setup.
- Most clients pay by bank transfer, or invoices are large: Dubsado. HoneyBook’s uncapped 1.5% on bank transfers adds up on big invoices.
- Consultant or coach who recommends systems to clients: Stack Space. It puts calls, follow-up and proposals in one place, and it can draft a priced proposal from the call itself.
- Agency founder losing leads to unanswered calls: Stack Space. Client paperwork is table stakes; the win is never missing a lead. See our full guide to the best CRM for agencies.
- Booked-solid referral business with zero missed calls: stay put. Whichever of Dubsado or HoneyBook you’re on is doing its job.
If you’re weighing the switch because your current stack has sprawled into six tools, read the duct-taped stack audit first. And if pricing your services is the real bottleneck, start with how to price your agency services.
What does switching actually cost you?
Whichever direction you move, budget for three things up front:
- Data migration. All three tools export and import contacts via CSV. Contracts and historical invoices are the sticky part, so keep read-only access to the old tool for a quarter rather than migrating archives.
- Template rebuilding. Your proposal, contract, and questionnaire templates need recreating. In Dubsado that’s the multi-weekend project; in HoneyBook its team converts your existing files for free; in Stack Space you rebuild contracts and forms, but proposals can be drafted straight from a call transcript.
- Mid-project clients. Never migrate an active project. Run new clients on the new system, finish existing ones where they started, and retire the old subscription at the natural break.
The cheapest switch is the one you make once, which is the real argument for deciding by trajectory, not by this month’s feature list. Buy the tool that fits the business you’re building toward, not the one you had last year.
FAQ
Is Dubsado or HoneyBook better for a small business? HoneyBook is better for most solo creatives because it works with almost no setup. Dubsado is better if you want deep customization and flat pricing and you’re willing to invest real setup time. Neither answers calls for you, and neither is a marketing-campaign tool.
Does HoneyBook charge transaction fees? Yes. HoneyBook charges from 2.7% + 10¢ on card payments and 1.5% on bank transfers collected through it, on top of the subscription (HoneyBook pricing page, October 2026). Dubsado and Stack Space add no fee of their own; you pay your processor’s rate, such as Stripe’s 2.9% + 30¢ on cards.
How much does Dubsado cost in 2026? Starter is $335 a year and Premier is $525 a year; paid monthly, they’re $35 and $55. The scheduler and automated workflows are on Premier only. Subscribers from before the December 2025 increase keep their old rates.
Can Dubsado or HoneyBook answer my phone or send campaigns? Neither answers calls for you. HoneyBook has an $8/mo add-on for a business phone line and two-way texts, but you still answer the calls yourself. For an AI receptionist that answers calls and a CRM that runs email campaigns, you need a platform like Stack Space. Everyday texts there go out from its registered number or a $15/mo number of your own; marketing texts wait on carrier registration. See what an AI receptionist actually does.
Is there a cheaper Dubsado or HoneyBook alternative? Dubsado’s Starter is $335 a year with no fee of its own on payments (Stack Space Launch is $300 a year billed annually, but it’s a different kind of tool). HoneyBook starts at $29/mo billed yearly and charges from 2.7% + 10¢ per card payment, so its real cost depends on how much you collect through it. Stack Space starts at $30/mo and adds calls and an AI Workforce that neither clientflow tool offers, so compare on what you actually need, not the sticker alone.
When should I switch from HoneyBook or Dubsado to a full CRM? When missed leads cost more than admin time: you’re getting calls you can’t answer, leads go cold without follow-up, or you’re bolting on separate tools for SMS, automation, or a phone line. Consolidating usually costs less than the tool pile it replaces.
Want client management that also answers the phone? Hear the receptionist answer a call on the AI receptionist page, or compare plans on pricing. Plans start at $30/mo, with no fee of ours on your payments.
