AI receptionist for a cleaning business: what it costs and what to check

What an answering service costs a cleaning business in 2026, human vs AI, with published prices, and what to check for recurring clients.

Hear the AI receptionist answer a real call — 60 seconds →

For a cleaning business taking about 80 calls a month, a human answering service costs roughly $400 to $800 a month at published prices, and an AI receptionist costs roughly $70 to $320. Most AI options now book appointments; what separates them for cleaning is whether they can move a regular client’s visit and what happens to the lead after the call. Below: the published prices side by side, a worked month, and the questions that matter for a cleaning company in particular.

Why do cleaning businesses miss so many calls?

Because the people who answer the phone are the people cleaning. Your hands are in a shower when the move-out quote calls, and the vacuum is running when a weekly client rings to swap Friday for Wednesday.

Missing those calls costs more than it feels like it does:

  • In Invoca’s 2026 home services benchmark, only 52% of calls were answered by a person, and 45% of the leads a person did answer converted on that call. (Vendor data across home-service trades; cleaning isn’t one of its categories.)
  • BrightLocal’s June 2026 survey of 1,200+ US consumers found 75% decide which local business to use in under 30 minutes, and 28% in under five.
  • The classic Harvard Business Review study of 1.25 million leads found firms that responded within an hour were nearly seven times as likely to qualify the lead as those that waited even one more hour. That was web leads, not calls, but the lesson carries: replying first is a large part of winning the customer.

A voicemail greeting doesn’t solve it. A move-out customer with a deadline calls the next company on the list.

Human vs AI vs hybrid: the options

Human answering services put a trained receptionist on your line. They’re warm and good with an upset client, and they’re priced by the minute or the call, so a busy month costs more.

AI receptionists answer calls at once, 24/7, for a flat or low per-minute price. The good ones book straight onto your calendar. The weak ones just take a message, which leaves you calling back anyway.

Hybrids use AI first and hand off to a person, or let you choose per call.

Hear the receptionist take a real call — it rings your phone in about a minute.

What does an answering service cost a cleaning business?

Published prices, from each company’s own pricing page, as of October 2026 (Jobber’s from our September review):

Service Type Published price How usage is counted
Ruby Human $250 (50 min), $395 (100), $720 (200), $1,725 (500) a month Minutes
PATLive Human $99 (50 min) to $759 (500 min); 200 min is $349 Minutes; extra $1.79–$2.29 each on these plans
Smith.ai receptionists Human $300 (30 calls), $810 (90), $2,100 (300) Calls; extra $8.50–$11.50 each
Abby Connect Human or AI $165 (50 min) to $1,380 (500 min) Minutes; AI answering counts as half a minute
Moneypenny (VoiceNation now redirects here) Human or AI People: $165 (50 min) to $985 (500). AI: $69 (25 calls) to $435 (250) Minutes or calls
Goodcall AI $79, $129, $299 a month, unlimited minutes Unique customers: 100, 500, 2,000, then 79¢, 26¢, 15¢ each
Beside AI $29 (30 calls) or $99 (unlimited) a month Calls
JustCall AI Voice Agent AI add-on $0.99 a minute pay-as-you-go (less in volume bundles), on a phone plan from $39 per user a month ($29 billed annually), 2 users minimum Minutes
Jobber AI Receptionist AI add-on $29 a month for 30 conversations, then $0.79 each, on a Jobber plan (our review) Conversations
Stack Space AI inside a CRM $30 (45 min), $125 (250 min), $355 (900 min), $800 (1,500 min) a month, plus prepaid minute packs Minutes, each call rounded up to the minute

One thing in Goodcall’s favor for cleaning: it charges by unique customers rather than calls, so a regular who rings three times in a month counts as one. If most of your calls are regulars, that matters.

A worked month for a two-crew cleaning company

Say you get about 80 calls a month, three minutes each on average: roughly 240 minutes, from about 60 different people, many of them regulars moving a visit.

Option How the month adds up About
Jobber AI Receptionist $29 + 50 extra conversations × $0.79, plus your Jobber plan $69 + Jobber
Goodcall Starter Flat, under 100 unique callers (79¢ each past that) $79
Beside Unlimited Flat $99
Stack Space Starter 250 minutes + a 100-minute pack (each call rounds up to the minute, so 80 calls is nearer 280); 800 texts $149
Stack Space Launch $30 (45 min) + three 100-minute packs at $24, about 345 minutes; Launch’s 150 texts cover call summaries for roughly 75 calls $102
Moneypenny AI The 50-call plan at $99 + 30 extra calls × $2.39 about $171
JustCall 240 min × $0.99 + 2 users × $39 about $316
PATLive (human) $349 for 200 min + 40 min × $1.99 about $429
Moneypenny people $422 for 200 min + 40 min × $1.91 about $498
Ruby (human) Past the $720 200-minute plan $720+
Smith.ai (human) The 90-call plan $810

So the AI receptionists cost a fraction of a human service, and among the AI options we are not the cheapest. Jobber’s add-on (if you already pay for Jobber), Goodcall and Beside all cost less. What to weigh is what happens after the call is answered, which is the next section.

What should a cleaning business check before choosing?

Most of these will answer the phone politely. These are the questions that separate them for cleaning work:

  1. Can it move a recurring client’s visit? Reschedules are the call you get most. Ask whether the receptionist changes the booking itself or takes a message for you to handle tonight.
  2. Does it book onto your real calendar, including blocking enough time for a deep clean versus a standard one?
  3. Does it recognize a returning client by phone number and know their usual day, or treat every regular like a stranger?
  4. Can it collect what you need for a quote: bedrooms, bathrooms, pets, move-in or move-out, square footage for commercial?
  5. What happens after hours and at the limit? Check what the caller hears when your plan’s minutes or calls run out.
  6. Does the lead go anywhere? If the call ends as an email transcript, you’re still the one turning it into a quote, a booking and an invoice.

Where Stack Space fits for cleaning companies

Stack Space is a CRM with the AI receptionist built in. The receptionist Stax trains answers your line 24/7 and books new cleans straight onto the calendar built into Stack Space, so bookings, clients and invoices live in one place (it can also sync with Outlook), and emails the client a confirmation when they give an email address. When a regular calls to move this week’s visit, it finds their next appointment and moves it, or cancels it, while they’re on the phone. It greets a returning caller with their last job or open estimate, and texts you a summary after each call (summaries count toward your plan’s texts). For regulars, you set a booking to repeat every week, every two weeks, every four weeks or monthly, and the visits are booked ahead on your calendar automatically, each one a real appointment the receptionist can move or cancel when the client calls. Moving every future visit to a new day is a change you make on the calendar: stop the old repeat and start a new one. (Weighing booking software too? See our Launch27 alternatives.)

Then the rest of the job happens in the same place. The estimate goes out from the client’s record. For weekly, every-two-weeks and monthly clients, recurring invoices bill on schedule, and a client can save their card on the pay page to be charged automatically, with a stop button on every invoice. When you mark the job done, a review request goes to every client the same way.

Plans are $30, $125, $355 or $800 a month, with one voice number included. There’s no free trial; you pay monthly, or annually for two months free, and cancel yourself. Minutes past your plan come from prepaid packs that never expire. Without one, callers hear a short message that you can’t take the call right now, the call is logged as missed, and your missed-call text-back goes out if you’ve switched it on. Nothing is billed beyond your plan.

Where others are better: if you live in Jobber already, its $29 add-on is the cheapest way to get answering inside the tool your crews use. If you want a human voice for every call, PATLive and Ruby are proven. And if your phone is quiet, Beside’s $29 plan may be all you need.

FAQ

How much does an answering service cost for a cleaning business?

At published October 2026 prices, a human service runs $99 to $250 a month for 50 minutes and $349 to $720 for 200 minutes (PATLive, Moneypenny, Abby Connect, Ruby). AI receptionists run from $29 (Beside, 30 calls) to about $320, depending on volume.

Is an AI receptionist good enough for cleaning clients?

For booking, quoting questions, and moving or cancelling a visit, yes, if it’s connected to your calendar. For a client who’s upset about a missed spot, many owners still want the call routed to them; check that the AI can transfer or flag those.

What’s the difference between a virtual assistant and an answering service for a cleaning business?

An answering service handles your phone. A virtual assistant is usually a person (or an AI) who also does admin work: scheduling, invoicing, chasing payments. An AI receptionist inside a CRM covers part of both.

Can I keep my business number?

Yes, with most services. You forward your existing number, usually only when you don’t pick up, so you still answer when you can. Our guide to forwarding calls to an AI receptionist shows how on each carrier.

Will it handle my recurring clients?

That’s the question to ask every vendor, because rescheduling regulars is most of a cleaning company’s calls. Ask whether it moves the existing booking itself, recognizes the client by phone number, and keeps the regular day and time.
