The FTC sued Air AI, the “conversational AI” phone-agent company, in August 2025 over its earnings and refund claims, and the company agreed to a settlement in March 2026. Its air.ai domain now belongs to an unrelated defense-software company, and there’s no Air AI product to sign up for. If you want an AI to answer your business’s phone today, the self-serve options start at $0.07 a minute for build-it-yourself platforms (Retell, Bland) and from free (Smith.ai, 25 calls) or about $30 a month for finished AI receptionists (Rosie, Goodcall, Stack Space), with most small-business plans under $300 and no upfront licence. Below: what the FTC said, the red flags to check in any AI phone vendor, and the alternatives with their published prices as of October 2026.

What happened to Air AI?

The short version, from the FTC’s own announcements:

  • August 25, 2025: the FTC sued Air AI Technologies, five related companies and three owners in federal court in Arizona. It alleged that since at least February 2023 they sold coaching, an “Air AI Access Card” and reseller licences by claiming buyers would earn back their money within days or months, and that they promised refunds they “rarely” honored. The FTC said some consumers lost “as much as $250,000.”
  • What it said about the product: the complaint quotes Air AI promising AI that could “do the entire job of a full time agent,” and alleges the technology was “often not able to perform basic functions like placing outbound calls to businesses, scheduling appointments, taking down email addresses, or responding accurately to questions.”
  • What it cost buyers: per the complaint, Access Cards sold for $15,000 to $30,000 and licences for up to $100,000, with AI usage billed by the minute on top.
  • March 24, 2026: Air AI and its owners agreed to a proposed settlement: an $18 million judgment, mostly suspended because they can’t pay, $50,000 for consumer relief, and a ban on selling business opportunities or making unsupported earnings claims. A proposed order takes effect once the court signs it.

These are the FTC’s allegations and a negotiated settlement, not a court’s findings on the facts. Either way, there’s nothing left to buy: the air.ai site now promotes an enterprise defense-readiness product.

Red flags to check in any AI phone agent

As the FTC described it, Air AI’s pitch mixed software with a get-rich offer. Whatever you buy next, these questions separate a phone tool from a pitch:

  1. Is the price published? A real product shows its monthly price and what’s included. Be wary of anything sold through a sales call with a five-figure “licence” or “access” fee.
  2. What’s promised: a working receptionist, or income? Software that answers your phone should be sold on what it does on the call. Earnings promises are what the FTC went after.
  3. Can you test it before you commit? Call the demo with your own hardest questions. Ask to hear a real transcript.
  4. What happens when you leave? Look for monthly billing you can cancel yourself, and a clear answer on your phone number and your data.
  5. How is usage billed? Minutes, calls or unique callers, and what happens at the limit: overage, or a pause.

Hear the receptionist take a real call — it rings your phone in about a minute.

Air AI alternatives compared (published prices, October 2026)

Tool Type Published price Billed by Self-serve

None of these charges a licence fee to start. All are monthly or pay-as-you-go, except Synthflow, which now sells only enterprise contracts.

Which kind should replace Air AI?

Build-your-own platforms (Retell, Bland) are the closest to what Air AI said it was: a voice agent you design, prompt and connect to a phone number, paid by the minute. They suit you if you, or someone you pay, can write prompts and test call flows. Budget for build time as well as minutes.

Finished AI receptionists (Rosie, Goodcall, Smith.ai, My AI Front Desk) answer your line from your business details in an afternoon. Pick by how you’re billed: minutes, calls or unique callers. Check what happens at the limit and which plan books onto your calendar (Rosie’s calendar booking starts at $149).

A receptionist inside a CRM is for when the call is the start of the work: the booking, the quote, the invoice and the follow-up happen in the same place.

If you bought an Air AI licence to resell AI to clients, look for a platform with reselling built in and published wholesale prices, so you know your margin before you sign anyone up.

Where Stack Space fits

Stack Space is a CRM with the AI receptionist built in. The receptionist Stax trains answers your line 24/7 within your plan’s minutes, asks what the caller needs, books onto the calendar built into Stack Space (Outlook sync available), moves or cancels an existing appointment while the caller is on the phone, and emails the confirmation. It transfers callers to you live when they ask for a person, have an emergency or are upset, if you set a transfer number. After the call, the transcript is on the contact, and you get a summary by text. Then the estimate, the invoice and the review request go out from the same record.

The prices are on the pricing page: $30 a month with 45 minutes (about 11 to 22 calls), $125 with 250, $355 with 900 and $800 with 1,500. Past your minutes you buy prepaid packs that never expire (100 for $24); without one, callers hear a short message that you can’t take the call right now, the call is logged as missed, and your missed-call text-back goes out if you’ve switched it on. Nothing bills beyond your plan, there’s no contract, and you cancel in the app. There’s no free trial; you can hear the receptionist answer a call before you pay.

For agencies, white-label reselling starts on the $355 Professional plan, with your brand on a branded subdomain and client billing through your own Stripe. See white-label AI receptionist.

Where others are better: Retell and Bland give developers far more control and cost less per minute, and Goodcall and Rosie give you more minutes or callers per dollar if you only need the phone answered.

FAQ

Is Air AI still in business?

We found no Air AI product on sale: the air.ai domain now belongs to an unrelated defense-software company. Separately, the FTC sued Air AI Technologies in August 2025, and the company and its owners agreed to a proposed settlement in March 2026 that bans them from selling business opportunities.

What did the FTC say Air AI did?

The FTC alleged Air AI sold coaching, “Access Cards” and reseller licences by claiming buyers would quickly earn back their money, promised refunds it rarely honored, and oversold an AI that often couldn’t place calls, schedule appointments or answer questions accurately. These are allegations; the company agreed to a proposed settlement in March 2026.

Can I get my money back from Air AI?

The proposed settlement includes $50,000 for consumer relief; the rest of the $18 million judgment is suspended. Any refund program would be announced on the FTC’s refunds page, and never pay a third party who offers to recover the money for a fee.

What is the best Air AI alternative?

For a custom voice agent you build yourself, Retell AI or Bland AI. For a receptionist that answers and books with little setup, Rosie, Goodcall or Smith.ai’s AI plan. For a receptionist inside a CRM with booking, invoicing and follow-up, Stack Space, from $30 a month.

How much should an AI receptionist cost?

At published October 2026 prices, finished AI receptionists start free (Smith.ai, 25 calls) or at about $30 a month, with most small-business plans under $300, and build-it-yourself platforms $0.07 to $0.31 a minute. Our guide to how much an AI receptionist costs works through the math.
