Ruby is a US-based human answering service that costs $250 a month for 50 minutes up to $1,725 for 500, with 24/7 coverage and Spanish included. It rounds every call up to the next full minute, counts hold time, and doesn’t publish what extra minutes cost. Other human services with published prices (PATLive, AnswerConnect, Moneypenny) cost less for the same minutes, and AI receptionists such as Upfirst, Goodcall, Dialzara and Stack Space cost $70 to $150 for about 100 calls. Below: Ruby’s prices, six things in its terms to know, and the alternatives side by side as of November 3, 2026.

Ruby has strong reviews for a reason: 4.5 from 853 reviews on Trustpilot, with many customers praising receptionists by name. Most of the complaints are about billing, and the terms below explain why.

What does Ruby cost?

From Ruby’s pricing page:

Plan Monthly Minutes
Starter $250 50
Solo $395 100
Small business $720 200
Growing $1,725 500

Ruby says the plans differ only in minutes. Every one includes 24/7 live answering (nights, weekends and holidays), Spanish and bilingual calls, scheduling, lead qualification and intake, transcripts and the mobile app, with no fees for setup or after-hours coverage. Live chat is a separate plan from $143 a month for 10 chats.

Ruby doesn’t use AI to answer calls. Its AI page describes AI that “supports a trained human receptionist rather than replacing them”: call routing, transcripts, sentiment and robocall filtering, included at no extra cost.

Six things in Ruby’s terms to know

  1. Every call rounds up to a full minute. Ruby’s billing help article (September 2026) says minutes are billed in 60-second increments, “rounded up to the next 60-second mark.” A 10-second wrong number costs a minute.
  2. Hold time counts. The same article says Ruby includes hold time and stops counting once a call is transferred to you or your voicemail.
  3. The overage rate isn’t published. Extra minutes are billed “at the plan’s overage minute rate,” in arrears, and the rate isn’t on the pricing page, FAQ or terms. Ask for it in writing before you sign.
  4. You can’t downgrade right away. New customers get “a three-billing-cycle calibration window,” and a downgrade needs three billing periods on the same plan. Unused minutes don’t roll over.
  5. Paying by card costs 3% more. Ruby’s terms (March 2026) add a 3.0% surcharge on card payments, and say Ruby may adjust pricing at any time.
  6. Port your number within three months of leaving. The terms let you take a Ruby number with you, but Ruby may release numbers not ported away within three months of termination.

Robocall filtering is opt-in, and filtered calls don’t count toward your minutes (Ruby help). The plan is month to month, renews every 30 days, and cancelling takes effect at the end of the billing period. First-time customers can get a full refund within 21 days or 500 minutes, whichever comes first (FAQ).

Hear the receptionist take a real call — it rings your phone in about a minute.

More detail on several of these: PATLive alternatives, Abby Connect alternatives and Smith.ai alternatives.

A worked month: 100 calls, about 250 minutes

At about two and a half minutes a call after rounding, 100 calls is roughly 250 minutes:

Option How it adds up About
Upfirst $59.95 for 90 calls + 10 × $1 $70
Goodcall Up to 100 different callers $79
Dialzara $99 for 220 min + 30 × $0.45 $113
Rosie Calendar booking needs the $149 plan $149
Stack Space Starter 150 minutes included plus one 100-minute pack ($24); a second if rounding pushes you past 250 $149–$173
Moneypenny AI The 100-call plan $199
Smith.ai AI Pro $150 for 75 calls + 25 × $2.50 $213
AnswerConnect The 300-minute plan $395
PATLive $349 for 200 min + 50 × $1.99 $449
Moneypenny people $422 for 200 min + 50 × $2.39 $542
Ruby $720 for 200 minutes plus 50 at an unpublished rate, or $1,725 for the 500-minute plan $720 plus overage
Abby Connect, all people $599 for 200 minutes + 50 × $2.99 about $749
Smith.ai receptionists $810 for 90 calls + 10 × $10.50, plus $1.50 a booking $915 plus bookings

Ruby’s $720 base is above PATLive, AnswerConnect and Moneypenny at this volume, before an overage it doesn’t publish; Abby Connect’s human plan and Smith.ai’s per-call receptionists cost more again. What you’re paying for is Ruby’s receptionists, its 24/7 bilingual coverage and its reviews.

Human or AI: which should replace Ruby?

Stay with people if your calls are emotional, sensitive or high-stakes, or need a person every time. PATLive and AnswerConnect publish lower per-minute prices for 24/7 human answering; ask each how it bills short calls and hold time.

Move to an AI receptionist if most calls are routine: hours, prices, “can you come Tuesday.” An AI costs a fraction of a person per call and books straight onto a calendar. Check how each counts usage (minutes, calls or unique callers) and what happens when it runs out.

Where Stack Space fits: it’s the AI receptionist built into a CRM. The receptionist Stax trains answers 24/7 within your plan’s minutes, recognises returning callers by their number, books and moves appointments on the calendar built into Stack Space, and texts the confirmation, emailing it too when it has the address. If you set a transfer number, it puts callers through to you when they ask for a person or it can’t help. The recap and transcript land on the customer’s record. Each call rounds up to the next minute, like Ruby’s, and when your minutes and any packs run out the receptionist pauses until you add a pack or your billing month resets, so nothing bills on its own. Plans are $125 (Starter, 150 minutes) and $355 (Professional, 900 minutes), month to month, with no free trial.

How to switch from Ruby

  1. Check whose number your customers call. If Ruby provided it, port it to your new provider within three months of leaving; if Ruby answers your own forwarded number, just change the forwarding.
  2. Give notice before the next 30-day renewal. Cancelling takes effect at the end of the billing period.
  3. Run the new service alongside Ruby for a week on overflow calls, and read every transcript.
  4. Move your call instructions across: services, prices, service area, emergencies and who gets transferred. Our guide to forwarding calls to an AI receptionist covers the carrier codes.
